I have VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core installed. I have add this VM as Domain Controller. Being GUI less make it difficult to perform some task sometimes. Therefore I like to connect to the VM via RSAT.
If my workstation is part of domain , then there should not be any issue. However, my workstation is the parent of VM which is not part of domain. I have to figure the way to do this.
It turns out it is not that difficult.
1. Create the local user on the DC and add the user as member of the administrators group
net user /add USER1 *
net localgroup administrators /add USER1
2. Create the same user name on the workstation . The user name would need to be exactly the same user name as in DC and password needs to be the same as well.
On the DC, the user is actually DOMAIN\USER1, on the workstation, the user is WORKGROUP\USER1, since they have the same credential, now you can connect to the DC with RSAT.
