0 Hyper-V Lab Build note 2: Admin Server With RSAT and Microsoft iSCSI

This is 2nd Host of my lab environment.  I initially want to use my laptop as admin server which I can use RSAT manage my Server Core DC and Hyper-V but my laptop is not part of DC. It would be not easy ( if it is even possible ) to make it happen.  So I have build the this VM for running RSAT and also serve as my share storage.

1. Install Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise from media.

It does not make any difference to use Enterprise or Standard edition for the purpose what I want to do with this VM.

2. Base configuration

  • Change computer name
  • Configure firewall
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="ICMP Allow Incoming V4 Echo" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow
  • Change the DNS server point to the DC server. This is for adding the computer to the DC. without this step , the computer can not find the DC
  • Join the domain
netdom join %computername% /domain:STAR.COM /userd:STAR\administrator /passwordd:XXXXX

3. RSAT is include in the Windows Server but it needs to be enabled

Server manger –> Features –> Remote Server Admin tools

4.  Install ISCSI software

The Microsoft iSCSI is available to download from here

iSCSI target software can only be installed on win2008R2 not Windows 2008. After uncompressed  the software, it contains 2 installer. iscsitarget_public is iSCSI target. iscsitargetClient_public is for the client.

5. Create iSCSI target

start the “Microsoft iSCSI software Target”

IQN identifier here is  the IQN name from the client. Which means which IQN client is allow to use this target.

Create the VHD disk on the existing Volume( E ) and add it to the iSCSI Target
