4 ERworld 2012 on Demand / ERwin 9

The free ERworld online conference( Oct 22th-24th) just finished. The conference is now available on demand. You can access all the conference online from here until 1/22/2013. Unfortunately, it does not like VMware tech day we can download the video and put in the pocket on the go. They only allow to view it online. It would be nice if they can change that.

One of the exciting news is the ERwin 9 release. According to CA tech support, the license is available on request starting this week ( 10/22) if you have existing contract in place. ERwin 9 has complete redefine its architecture. In the earlier version  ( 4, 7, 8), ERwin Data modeler is 2 tier application. The ERwin data modeler connect to the Model mart through the database client and we have to create the login/user in the Model mart database.

ERwin 9 now is 3 tier application. ERwin data modeler connect to the mid-tier application server and the application server connect to the Model Mart database.

This is very nice change because now we are able to abstractor user from database layer and manage them in the application layer. The user management can be done by LDAP or AD integration. Another benefit for doing this is we don’t have to worry about user may connect to the model mart directly and mess around with the model mart database objects. If you are using Sybase or MSSQL as Data Mart, in the ERwin 7, the Model mart user would need to be grant public role  permission in the database . Not very restrict way for manage database entitlement.

Although, the 3-tier architect  is new for ERwin, but it is not new for other competitor, such as Sybase Power Designer and  Embarcadero ERStudio. I would be interesting to know how does ERwin handle the performance for the Model Mart connection. Sybase Power Designer has the Proxy service as cache layer to improve the performance.

For long period of time, ERwin dominate the data model market but in recent years, it seems to be catch up by other competitors. ERwin data mart design is poor, missing index, pick up the wrong query plan. The performance turning guide is not helpful. One of the ultimate solution is purging the mart database. Isn't version control one of the reason to use the model mart at first place?   It is certainly nice to see the CA seems to realize they are losing the market and put more engineer renounce on it.

As far as I know, ERwin 9 still does not support for Kerberos connectivity to Sybase. I am surprise when I talk about Kerberos to the support engineers in CA, they have no idea what is Kerberos is …

I will have more information when I have chance to play around with ERwin 9.
